In 1913 Charlie Birger all started his occupation as a bootlegger, delivering southern Illinois with whiskey and beer. He was once charismatic, with an easygoing demeanour and a cavalier generosity that made him well known. The stuff of legend, he used to be half monster, half Robin Hood. within the early days, he could emerge from his restaurant/saloon in tiny Ledford in Saline County with a cigar field choked with cash and throw handfuls within the air for the youngsters.
